Body Language Mastery
All the skills in the world will not help you if you are unhealthy. And that applies as much to the body as it docs to the mind. If your body is honed and prepared then all your reactions and reflexes will be quicker. If your mind is active and thinking positively then your whole approach, attitude and even body language are working for you.
If you have had extensive training in some sport or competitive activity, you will probably have all kinds of polite habits that will work against you. Street fighting is not a sport It is not conducted in controlled, antiseptic con-ditions. You must programme out of yourself sportsman's habits of advertising their moves. Each sport has a set of accepted moves and whether you realise it or not. as you intend to embark on one of them you are actually signalling your intention by the body language you adopt. Giving advance warning of a move on the street could spell your death certificate. For instance when a guy drops his shoulders, he may he about to sling a punch. So waich your body language. You will learn how to use the surprise element ever more effectively as you master the various moves and tactics. Bccausc they will have become practically instinctive, you will have trained yourself to strike quickly and powerfully before your opponent has a chance to close in. Anticipation and...
If you're paying close attention to one person on the battlefield, you're more likely to notice anything unusual or dangerous about him. Apply your current Evaluate bonus to IQ rolls to notice him playing tricks on you (see Dirty Tricks, p. B405) Body Language rolls to determine whether he's nervous, on drugs, Berserk, etc. Expert Skill (Hoplology) rolls to identify his martial-arts style and Observation rolls to spot Supernatural Features, concealed weapons, and other interesting items. This applies only while you Evaluate.
Likewise, in developing a fighting spirit this exercise and those like it, by visualizing the opponent and a successful outcome, psychologically build the confidence or inner strength of the student. If he believes he can do it, very often he can, and the adjustment of his body language or demeanor may be sufficient to dissuade an enemy from attacking.
As you recall from the discussion of the strategy of stop hit, the ability to read the body language of your opponent can give you a great advantage. It is quite logical then to realize that if you develop the ability to conceal your intentions through the development of nontelegraphic skills, and to conceal your intentions through movement, you are less vulnerable to your opponent. One exercise I was taught to develop this is to isolate the action and relax. For example forefist, your partner hold a focus mit and you strike it. If you telegraph, he will move the mit. Your partner must tell you what the telegraph was and help you eliminate it. Once you can do it well, increase the distance to work speed and the nontelegraphic aspect of the strike. Also, strike from motion and see the difference. You need to know what your abilities and limitations are at given distances. This helps you know when you need to move closer as well as when you are at a vulnerable distance where you must...
A lot of prospective thugs select their victims by watching their body language. So make sure you project confidence, assurance and pride. Very often in psyching out a guy who wants to beat you up, it's not what you say that will convince him as much as the way you say it and what your body stance says. Mean what you say. Leave no room for doubt or questioning. Convey strength and in most cases the issue won't even become physical.
There are distinct differences between the sexes that may in some ways explain mating patterns as well as the value of androgyny. I refer to research on brain development and compartmen-talization. The female corpus collosum permits significantly more energy to flow between segments of the brain, strongly suggesting that the bicameral brain is much more of a male problem than one for the female. The corpus collosum is seen by some psychologists as the seat of the Void. As a woman has greater access to her brain's storage capacity, she is more sensitive than a man. She is more alert to smell, touch, and sound. She has better hand-eye coordination. She sees better and is more skilled at reading and projecting the social cues of body language. She smiles more than men when she is not happy and is nicer to people she may not like-which could be considered a positive defense mechanism. She has a better memory for faces and character. These could all be considered side effects of having the...
New Use - Predict Attack This use of Sense Motive may not be used untrained. By reading your opponent's body language, you can predict when and where an attack will strike and be better prepared to intercept or prevent it. On a successful skill check (you may choose either DC 10 plus your attacker's BAB or skill vs. skill against your attacker's Bluff) you gain a +2 to any Block or Disarm opposed check. If you have Improved Combat Throw, you may take a +2 bonus on an opposed Trip check through your attack of opportunity.
Inner Balance Autohypnosis, Blind Fighting, Body Control, Body Language, Body Sense, Breath Control, Dreaming, Immovable Stance, Light Walk, Lizard Climb, Meditation, Mental Strength, Mind Block, and Sensitivity. Reaction bonus pacifists, ascetics, and those who practice soft or internal martial-arts styles. 15 points level.
The GM shouldn't tell the players when an NPC makes a successful feint or Ruse against a PC. He should do everything he can to convince them that the NPC just missed. By the same token, the GM shouldn't abuse his omniscience and have NPCs flee from successful feints by PCs. By definition, the subject of a feint doesn't know he's been had An observer who takes a Concentrate maneuver and makes a successful roll against Tactics or Body Language (to read one of the fighters involved) might realize what's going on . . . but this shouldn't be automatic.
Prediction Shots Ranged combat involves leading the target - that is, tracking his motion and calculating where to shoot so that the projectile will intercept his path. Many archers and marksmen even claim to be able to read a target's body language, deduce his reaction to seeing a weapon pointed at him (or to the shot itself), and shoot where he'll jump, duck, step, etc. To simulate such strategies, the GM may let fighters use Deceptive Attack (p. B369) with ranged weapons. Since this represents an attempt to put the shot where the target is most likely to dodge, and not the ploys used in melee combat (see What is . . . a Deceptive Attack , p. 111), the defense penalty reduces Dodge but not Block or Parry. As usual for a Deceptive Attack, the attacker's effective skill after all modifiers must be at least 10, which makes this option most useful at short range. Ranged Feints The target of a ranged attack only gets an active defense if he's aware of the shooter, because then he can...
It is important, as I stated earlier to keep a check on the opponent's body language. If' he is aggressive and moving forward then he is a greater threat than if he is aggressive and standing back. The difference being that the attacker that is moving forward and touching the fence is usually preparing to attack. The opponent that stands back is usually posturing and does not want to become physical. will be signs of adrenal reaction this attack body language which, if spotted, can help you to recognise potential menace. It has to be said though, that many of the very experienced attackers may have learned to hide adrenal reaction and only an expert eye will see imminent attack.
Effect You fascinates up to 2d4 HD of creatures for as long as you maintain your gestures. Once you stops making hypnotic gestures, the effects wear off in two rounds, giving you time to either attack your foes or make a Hide check. This ability counts against your Ki. You may only call on your Ki (for any purpose) a number of times per day equal to your Wisdom modifier.
Also, synchronizing your body language with that of the subject can increase rapport. For example, you can feel how closely united soldiers on parade are, or church members with their heads bowed in prayer. This must be done carefully, or the subject may accuse you of mocking him derisively. One thing should be noted with regard to reading body language. Whenever an individual makes one of the gestures indicated as a Kuji-in position, he or she is unconsciously indicating which state or mood is predominant at that moment. The hands need not be folded together in the elaborate ritual shown here, but anytime one hand covers the other, it indicates hidden knowledge. Whenever the arms, legs, or fingers are crossed, it is a gesture of defense. There are many such mudras, the study of which may consume a lifetime.
