Cross Training for the Relative Beginner

I have met several karate and shaolin instructors who practise and teach bagua as a profitable sideline. And, in the vast majority of cases, their internal arts are anything but Similarly, those students who have done yoga or meditation training of one kind or another or any of the New Age body mind disciplines may spend too much time trying to compare what they are learning to what they already know (or think they know).

Direction Of Energy

Extending the index fingers and curling the corresponding middle finger around each while keeping the other fingers interlocked forms the second kanji (Figure 2). This represents the ability to direct the flow of energy within the body. The first posture develops the student's sensory withdrawal skills, making one aware of the internal sounds and vibrations. In time, the power to harmonize with this flow of internal energy enables one to develop psychokinetic abilities. The finger entwining is similar to, and symbolic of, the two serpents on the medical caduceus. In fact, the caduceus may have been the source from which this kanji was derived. In Hindu Hatha Yoga, as well, there are two intertwining channels of energy that unite the various centers of power within the body.

Amazing Secrets Of The Martial Arts Masters

The Me ditative Position. there are as many different positions for meditation (or concentration on a specific thought towards a specified goal) as there are forms of meditation. All h ave their benefits but some of them are difficult to get into position to do. So we will use a simple but effective position, called in Yoga the half lotus position.

Chi Kung and Kundalini The Real Secret of The Masters

Worthwhile martial arts have a basis in meditation and chi kung. Usually the secrets cf chi are not passed down until the student has spent long years proving his or her worthiness of the gift. There are many techniques for transmission and generation of chi but all require a master-student relationship unless you are inclined to intense self-study. Self-study is the source of unique gifts and often requires conquering your greatest fears. According to Sun Tzu, self-adventure also results in the greatest powers. Only time will tell, but there are probably more accomplished people doing esoteric studies on their own right now than at any time in human history. Mantak Chia's many books on Taoist esoteric practice provide excellent information on this little-understoodarea in the higher-level martial arts that is the equivalent of the kundalini in yoga. As you study the literature left by the great martial artists of the East, there is always reference to a number cf concepts that may...

Qigong and Physical Culture

Qigong practice is just the opposite of physical training, and it does not require violent movements. Its movements are unhurried, slow and round. They are very slow to the extent that they become motionless and come to a standstill. It is known that in such a cultivation way as meditation one stays in the state of tranquillity, and one's heart beating as well as blood circulation etc. all will be slowed down. In India there are many Yoga masters who can sit in water or be buried under the ground for many days. They make themselves completely tranquilized, and can even control their heart beats. Suppose that one's cells divide once a day. A practitioner may make the cells in the human body divide once every two days, once every week, once every half a month, or even once in a longer period of time. Thus, he has already extended his life. This only refers to those cultivation systems which cultivate nature without cultivating life. They can also reach this step, and prolong their own...

Bolinas, Calif. Shelter Publications, 1980. Stretching is necessary for the body's ability to process higher energy. This fun book of stretches is very helpful. IF you want to be very knowledgeable, combine this with the analysis of asanas you get monthly in the popular magazine Yoga Journal and that will provide all the exercises you need.

History Of Zen In China

When Yoga, is being performed, the forms which come first, producing apparitions in Brahman, are those of misty smoke, sun, fire, wind, fire-flies, lightnings, and a crystal moon. When, as earth, water, light, heat, and ether arises, the fivefold quality of Yoga takes place, then there is no longer illness, old age, or pain for him who has obtained a body produced by the fire of Yoga. The first results of Yoga they call lightness, healthiness, steadiness, a good complexion, an easy pronunciation, a sweet odour, This, the firm holding back of the senses, is what is called Yoga. He must be free from thoughtlessness then, for Yoga comes and goes (Katha Upanisad, ii. 10, 11). This is the rule for achieving it (viz., concentration of the mind on the object of meditation) restraint of the breath, restraint of the senses, meditation, fixed attention, investigation, absorption-these are called the sixfold Yoga. When beholding by this Yoga, be beholds the gold-coloured maker, the lord, the...

The Kundalini Experience

Chi sickness or emerging kundalini problems weren't part of her perceptual world or mine. Fortunately Dr. Richard Grant, a political economist at the college who was taking my hoshinjutsu course, had read in the field of Ayurvedic medicine and recommended Mantak Chia's work to me. The techniques of Taoist esoteric yoga corresponded to the chi kung but had some additional safety factors built in such as stronger emphasis on keeping one's tongue up when meditating as well as reversing the direction of the energy occasionally when running the microcosmic orbit. I was eventually able to heal the damage done to the jade gates (energy pointing at the moon. Good works may or may not teach you compassion. Sit zazen and learn to breathe using chi kung methodology, get into yoga to stretch out your spine and learn balance, go dancing and fall in love, and do something really scary for focus and hormones-real combatic martial arts, mountain climbing, performing arts, open sea scuba diving,...

Teaching Esoteric Strategy at the College Level

Camper had a young Alaskan friend who wanted to study with me. His name was Steve Noonkesser. He was a history major and very analytical, good with computers, and loved playing Dungeons and Dragons. His joining our little circle made the next semester very interesting. Teaching should also be learning, and Steve, having grown up in Alaska with Eskimos, had some very interesting perspectives concerning man's place in nature. We began to integrate some of the techniques he'd learned from his Indian friends into the course. I began to study and practice chi kung and Iyengar yoga, which amplified the Zen practice I'd been doing on and off for years. I learned how to dungeon-master and we added role playing to our strategy sessions as mental exercises. amount of strength. Steve, because he was physically powerful, became our guinea pig. He also encouraged the introduction cf weapons at a much lower belt level than Camper and I had discussed. We decided...

Phil and I hadn't come to India to find wrestlers. We'd come to study ashtanga yoga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the then 88-year-old patriarch of this ancient art. Phil was a teacher of Brazilian jujutsu at Maxercise, the first center in Philadelphia to offer classes in the Gracie system. I was one of his students. Both of us shared a passion for ashtanga yoga, and early in 1998, we decided to deepen our study of it with a visit to Pattabhi Jois. Before we left, we'd heard from various people that the roots of jujutsu lay in India, and we thought it would be interesting to go there and find some actual Indian wrestlers. Upon arriving in Mysore, we figured we'd just ask a taxi driver where the nearest wrestling school was. The warm-ups were arduous. They consisted of several sun salutations, in which we bent forward to touch our hands to the floor, jumped back to a push-up position, moved our chests forward and upward to do a backbend, and then lifted our buttocks toward the ceiling in...

Strange Stuff that Wont Seem So Strange after a While

The Textbook of Yoga Psychology A new translation and interpretation of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras for meaningful application in all modem psychologic disciplines. New York The Julian Press, 1963. Need I say more Patanjali was the greatest psychologist in all of history. His exposition of the spiritual mental process is completely accurate and transcends cultural influence. He was a man for all times. Following the directions for chi kung meditative practice recommended by Taoist scholars of 2500 years ago, in 1985 Dr. Morris survived what is commonly referred to as the arousal of the kundalini in yoga, and the greater kan and li by practitioners of Chinese esoteric meditation arts. After achieving these levels of mastery in traditional Asian systems of enlightenment, Glenn was able to replicate his experience for his own students using the scientific method to create a martial way appropriate for Americans (Hoshinroshiryu) but firmly based in the combat...

Exchanges with Interesting People

In 1990 I went to two day-long certification granting seminars. The first was called The Healing Process Exploring Body-mind Integration. The teachers were two white witches into Reiki (Japanese energy work). One was Meg Blanchet-Cole, who obviously had a background in yoga, and the other was Barbara Allen, an R.N. with considerable chiropractic experience. We all sat down in a circle on our pillows. I had cleverly arranged to sit next to Meg, who is stunning and exudes a strong white aura. I noticed that she was blocking energy between her shoulder blades and reached over to hit the shiatsu points that would release it. She said, Don't touch me I politely backed off.

The Godan or Masters Test for a Ninja

On a political level Hatsumi may have been informing me that I shouldn't be such a smart-ass. After all, these other testees were real hardworking ninjas and I was am only a hobbyist amateur with the unmitigated gall and temerity to keep coming back for more. On a deep physical level the hormonal drivers of chi are activated by the adrenals atop the kidneys (or less technically, by fear), and as a scientist and practitioner of chi kung and Taoist esoteric yoga I had figured out the magick and was treating it too lightly. Hatsumi was going to make me sit until he felt the proper amount of fear emanating from me. This is not storefront tae kwan do takeyurdo, this is the thirty-fourth grandmaster of the Togakure Ryu lineage about to swing a stick at your head and you should pray to all you regard as holy that he misses. Now get with the program, as the blow is coming. Although I was sitting in seiza, the way my guts were churning and witnesses inform me my body was shaking, I think I was...

Screwing Up Higher Sexual Practice

An interpreter of esoteric traditions that I've come to trust, Georg Feurstein, is the author of Yoga The Technology of Ecstasy and Holy Madness The Outer Limits of Religion and Morality. Feurstein writes that Marpa (1012-1097, founder of the Kagyupa school of Vajrayana Buddhism, better known as Tibetan Tantrism) had eight tantric consorts in addition to his chief wife. (Moslems and Mormons are were allowed four. Nine is a symbolic number to Buddhists.) Milarepa (1040-1143, the most famous of Marpa's students, considered the greatest Tibetan poet) was a folk hero as well as a weather magician. He liked to sing naked, as well as build towers and suffer Marpa's abuse. Milarepa is known to have initiated several of his female devotees. The avadhuta (Zen or crazy wisdom form of enlightenment) Drukpa Kunley (1455-1570) initiated more than five thousand women into the sexual secrets of tantrism. As the tantric techniques are similar to the Taoist, that may help to account for his longevity....

Eagle Claw Kung Ying Jow Pai The Book

Though it is often translated as an energy flow, Ki literally means breath and everything that breathes, from animals and plants to the world itself (as felt on the wind) is a part of Ki. As such, Ki is essential to all aspects of the practitioner's life. Martial arts and yoga teach the student to channel Ki through meditation and deep breathing exercises. Feng Shui arranges a living space to allow Ki to flow freely through everything in the room (including those who live there).

The Method Instruction Adopted By Zen Masters

Habit comes out of practice, and forms character by degrees, and eventually works out destiny. Therefore we must practically show optimism, and habitually nourish it in order to reap the blissful fruit of enlightenment. The pure meaning of securing mental calmness is the practice of Zazen, or the sitting in meditation. This method was known in India as Yoga as early as the upanisad period, and developed by the followers of the Yoga system. But Buddhists sharply distinguished Zazen from Yoga, and have the method peculiar to themselves. Breathing exercise is one of the practices of Yoga, and somewhat similar in its method and end to those of Zen. We quote here Yogi Ramacharaka to show how modern Yogis practise it Yoga claims that various supernatural powers can be acquired by Meditation, but Zen does not make any such absurd claims. It rather denies those who are believed to have acquired supernatural powers by the practice of austerities. The following traditions clearly show this...

What Good Is Enlightenment

IN The Kundalini Experience I describe what the great awakening feels like, and in the Godan Test what the lesser awakening feels like in terms of sensitivity. In chi kung as well as Taoist esoteric yoga, these are referred to as the greater and lesser kan andli. In religious traditions enlightenment is associated with sainthood, or being in tune with (called by) God. In military traditions it's associated with invincibility in warfare and the use of superior strategy, as in Joan of Arc or Sun Tzu. In art and science it manifests as creativity. In yoga an enlightened master manifests the will of God through self-development. In common parlance enlightenment is referred to as being intuitive and usually thought of as an on-again, off-again experience related to luck. In chi kung it is considered a biological enhancement of natural proclivities and is permanent if the practitioner is careful and knowledgeable. Historically enlightenment is considered quite rare.

Differences between hard styles and soft styles

Art, that they will be practising some form of evil occult This has come about because many people link the internal martial arts to Lao Tse, a man who wrote the I ching, or book of changes . Lao Tse can be likened to as Jesus is to Christianity. Jesus really does not have much at all to do with Christianity He was not a Christian By the same token, Lao Tse was Not a Taoist Taoism was invented due to his writings in just the same way that Christianity was invented based upon what Jesus taught. Linking a wonderful philosophy oflife, to the martial arts seems incongruous to me, and it is my belief that no internal martial art is based upon Taoism. The Taoist priests who came after Lao Tse id not wish to fight anyone, they only wanted to live in peace and harmony. If we read what Lao Tse said, and then read what Jesus is reported to have said, we see that there is not much difference. In fact, some passages of the I ching are as if the same people who wrote the New Testament have written...

The Position of the Chinese Tripitaka in World Buddhism

At about the same time, Mahayana scriptures tending towards 'eternal-reality' idealism, such as the Srimaladeve-Simhanada Sutra and the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, had begun to be found, followed by sutras such as the Lankavatara Sutra. Along with this development, the Asters and Yogacaryas of the Sravastivada school accepted the mind-only aspect of the Mahayana school. They compiled a number of Sastras of the Yogacara Vijnanavada and eventually flourished as a great Mahayana school in their own right. Then, at about the fifth century there was a further development of esoteric Yoga from the school of eternal-reality idealism. If one tried to follow the course of development of Buddhism as outlined above, one would have no difficulty tracing the evolution of the vast diversity of scriptures and doctrines held sacred by the many schools. Of the late Madhyamika works, i.e. works produced by the disciples of Nagarjuna after the rise of the Yogacara system, only the...

The techniques found in this book do not just come from Karate, which is what many people think of when they hear the words martial arts, but they come from Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu, Kung Fu, Aikido, Kendo, Zen, Yoga, and even psychology and ballet. Techniques that can be applicable to all forms of sports have been utilized in this manual for the mutual benefit of the players and the fans. For no one wants to get hurt or see a player get hurt, and everyone wants maximum performance, a positive attitude and a stronger mind. 4. There is no better form or exercise to develop powers of concentration and mind control than techniques of meditation taken fromZen and Yoga. 6. Breathing is both necessary to sustain life and vital in athletic performance, in relaxation and in concentration. If you don't believe me, hold your breath for a week, or try to sleep while breathing 70 times a minute. The best techniques of breath control in the world come from Yoga and its exercises.

Kung Fu

Pancratium (a combination of boxing and wrestling used by soldiers and gladiators) to the Buddhist monks, through whom it made its way to China. (This theory is based on the similarities between ancient Kung Fu and the boxing and wrestling maneuvers of Pancratium. However, all fighting styles seem to begin with these maneuvers, which appear to be universal among unarmed combatants.) Still others place the beginnings of Kung Fu as recently as the founding of the Shao-Lin temple around 500 BCE, when a Buddhist Monk arrived and imparted some of his philosophy and Yoga techniques to the Chinese monastery. Whatever its origins, there can be little doubt that the Shao-Lin temples and instructors aided the spread of Kung Fu to Japan, Okinawa, Thailand, Korea and beyond. Today, there are more than 1,500 styles of Kung Fu worldwide, ranging from combat styles to Taoist philosophies such as Tai Chi that are more exercise forms than martial arts.

Cosmic Language

When the enlightened beings meet, a smile is enough for them to fully understand each other, because they use the soundless telepathy which has a stereophonic sound to the ears of the one who has received it. The moment they smile, they have exchanged their views. This is not the only way they use. Sometimes they also use another way. As you know, the lamas of Tibet in the Esoteric Sect are good at making hand-signs. But when you ask a lama what the hand-sign is, he will tell you that it is the Supreme Yoga. What is it exactly He does not know, either. In fact, it is just the language of the enlightened being. When there are a lot of people, he will make a large hand-sign which is very beautiful, and there are various large hand-signs. When there are a few people, he will make a small hand-sign, which is also very beautiful. The small hand-sign is composed of different hand signs, which are very complex and rich in variety, since it is a language. In the past all this was regarded as...

Disco And Dbol

Unfortunately, Dianabol worked too well. The use, overuse and excessive abuse of steroids was changing the tides of bodybuilding once again. The association with drug use was distancing the bodybuilder from the fitness enthusiast and bodybuilding was in danger of losing all the advancements it had made up until that point. The industry tried to soften its image. In the 1980's, aerobics, yoga, and low fat recipes replaced much of grittier bodybuilding information. Everybody was an authority. Movie stars made exercise videos. Models wrote diet books. This trend proved to be both good and bad. Good, in the sense that it introduced many more people to the benefits of exercise. Bad, in the sense that much of the information wasn't accurate. Through it all, it turned out that the bodybuilding lifestyle proved itself to be the most effective method for changing the shape of one's body.

The Spleen Meridian

Spleen Meridian The Leg

This is a luo point and a master point for chong mai and a coupled point of yin wei mai . Dizziness and immediate great local pain with associated Qi drainage. This strike can cause knock out and much later damage. The pain caused by this strike can last for days, sleepless nights etc. I have noticed that with this strike, even analgesics will not stop the symptoms caused by the pain where the body scrunches up and becomes very tense. Because it is a master point of the extra meridian chong mai it will cause a great lessening of one s life-force. A gradual deterioration of the recipient s quality of life will become apparent. This is also helped by the disruption of the yin and yang energies of the stomach spleen . If the recipient is into things like yoga or qigong, taijiquan etc., before the strike, the affects of this good practice will slowly diminish until he or she is finally receiving no benefit from the practice. One of the reasons for doing such meditations is to unite pre...

Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Ch'i Ch'uan (also spelled Taiji Quan, T'ai Chi Chuan and many other ways) is the most advanced of the Chinese internal fighting styles. It is best known in the West as a yoga-like type of exercise, but it has martial applications as well, as its name ( supreme ultimate fist or yin-yang boxing ) indicates.

Tung Seventh Kanji

The seventh center of power is located at the site of the third eye, slightly above and between the eyebrows. The Yin Chiao, or Negative Leg Channel, rises from the instep through the inner leg, past the scrotum, up the center of the body, to this spot. If this channel is not functioning properly, one will sleep too much. This center represents the highest level of mind. Meditation on this site enables one to gain control over the various nerve centers of the body. Here also the astral counterpart of the sensory and motor nerve fibers of the spinal column converge. Along these travel the nerve impulses which control the body. In yoga this site is known as Triveni, or Three Knots.

CHU 1st Kanji Mudra

Cmc Xray Thumb

Once in this altered state, begin sensory withdrawal exercises to isolate the mind and develop conscious control of the body. In Yoga, the bandhis or muscle locks, like holding the diaphragm, chin-lock and so on, are the first step in developing the internal strength with which the Ninja forges his body in the fire of his will. Through this type of exercise the Yogi, and the Ninja, develop the ability to endure extremes of heat and cold, pain, hunger, and deprivation. On the eighty-first repetition, hold the breath as before with the diaphragm. Previously it was specified that the Lotus posture of yoga be employed for these exercises. The reason will now become apparent. When the breathing exercise described herein is properly performed over a long period, certain vibrations begin within the body. These emanate from the center of power we are now considering. The vibrations, coupled with a feeling of exhilaration, lessen motor control of the limbs. In the Lotus, the legs are in a...

Chapter Fifteen

The Chinese practitioners of chi kung, the swamis of India, the Zen roshi, and the ninja are prominent examples of those who pursue enlightenment or awakening. Awakening is simply waking up your id, shadow, or true self. Enlightenment is the biological process of rejuvenating your hormone system. The side effects of obtaining enlightenment are called in Sanskrit siddhi. In the context of Buddhist yoga or Vajrayana (perfect mastery over the body and forces of nature) there are eight ordinary siddhis 1. the sword that renders unconquerable 2. the elixir for the eyes that makes gods visible 3. fleetness in running 4. invisibility 5. the life essence that preserves youth 6. the ability to fly, levitate, and or project onto the astral plane 7. the ability to make certain medicines 8. power over the world of spirits and demons. Enlightenment is differentiated from the eight ordinary sid-dhi as the sole extraordinary or supreme siddhi. It's number nine. And its expression is as diverse as...

Internal Energy

Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao. Aurora Press, 1983. Written as clear, logical, and practical medical descriptions that encompass the physiological and spiritual practices for awakening and circulating chi. This is the basic book and contains practically all you'll ever need to know. Mantak Chia also has a valuable series of books relating to various other aspects of Taoist esoteric yoga, sexual practice, and nei kung published through Healing Tao, 2 Creskill Place, Huntington, New York 11743.

Life Force Qi Flow

This is a flow of sort that never changes. It is situated in the tantien area and can be larger or smaller at given times. It is like a ball around which Qi flows in all different directions. From this, lines of Qi are sent out automatically to all parts of the body especially when the body needs some extra help. As we grow older and we dip into this pot of Qi, it becomes depleted and we die. There are many practises that advocate the replenishing of this Qi, but one would have to be a saint in order to do this. It is my belief that this is a natural occurrence and the cause of our dying of old age. We can prolong life to a certain degree by practising things like Taijiquan, yoga, meditation etc., but to prolong life indefinitely I believe is impossible. However, I m open to suggestion on this.

Still Wai Dan Forms

Hypnosis Deep Breathing

Some of the still forms are very similar to Indian Yoga, which is not surprising, since China looked to India as a spiritual source for many years. The forms Lie on the floor on your stomach with the arms stretched forward. Lift the upper body and the feet off the floor simultaneously when inhaling, relax when exhaling. In Yoga this form is called the locust.
